Lucky Number 7 for Miss Tourism Queen International

7 things that you may, or may not, know about Miss Tourism Queen International through its first 7 years.

Top 5 winners of 2009 edition

• Since its inception in 2004, the crown of Miss Tourism Queen International has been dominated by European winners. The old continent has won the title 3 times, followed by Asia with 2 winners and South America with 1 winner.

• In the short history of Miss Tourism Queen International, Russia has emerged as a powerhouse with 2 victories in 2007 and 2009. Interestingly, tough it has won the crown twice, Russia has never won any of the special awards, which is odd considering the abundant number of awards handed out in each edition of this pageant.

• The country with the most placements at Miss Tourism Queen International is no other than the home turf China with a total of 5 placements, 4 of which are Top 5 placements. it is followed by another Asian country, Thailand with a total of 4 placements, 2 of which are Top 5 placements. However, neither of them has ever won the crown and their highest placement in this pageant so far is only as the First Runner Up (China in 2005 and Thailand in 2007).

• The home country China is also the country with the most award winnings in this pageant with 5 awards so far. In the Runner Up position is a tied between 5 countries who has won 3 awards each. These countries are Australia, Brazil, Cuba, India, Singapore.

• Venezuela magic apparently does not work very well at Miss Tourism Queen International. So far this powerhouse country has only placed once in 2005 and it has not reached a Top 5 placement yet, a very low achievement compared to its big success at other international pageants.

• The Disco Queen special award (an award given to the best dancer among the contestants) is perhaps a good luck charm for its winners. Out of 6 winners of this award, 4 placed in the final with 1 being a Fourth Runner Up, 1 being a Second Runner Up, and 1 being the winner.

• Two out of 6 Miss Tourism Queen International titleholders were contestants who have participated in other pageants before. The 2008 winner Silvia Cornejo from Peru was a Miss World 2006 contestant while the 2009 winner Yekaterina Grushanina from Russia was a Miss International 2008 contestant. Both were unplaced at their pageants but emerged victorious at Miss Tourism Queen International. Well it's just like the old proverb says "one man's trash is another man's treasure".

Mister International 2011 The Final Leaderboard Part 2

In the previous part, we have brought you on a "behind-the-scene" tour in making the Leaderboard. Now that all sets of score have been added to the Leaderboard, we can finally reveal to you our final Top 15 favorites for Mister International 2011. And this is it, the Final Leaderboard!

The Leaderboard
1. Brazil
2. Sweden
3. Slovenia
4. Czech Republic
5. Slovak Republic
6. Mexico
7. Ireland
8. Norway
9. Spain
10. Denmark
11. Philippines
12. Indonesia
13. Lebanon
14. Venezuela
15. Korea

The final set of score after all scores added to the Leaderboard

Before we talk about the contestants who are among the list, we will mention some other contestants who could potentially pull a surprise tonight. First is home turf Thailand. If only this pageant is not held in Bangkok, we will never consider him because, let's be honest, he is among the cellar-dweller in this batch. Lucky for him, he has the trump card of being the host delegate, so Top 15 is a very likely placement for him. In addition he is also a strong contender for Best National Costume (with a beautiful and lavish rendition of mystical being Kinnara) tough this time he deserves it. Other possible surprises are Portugal, South Africa, and Latvia. We actually love Nigeria as well, but being very late may jeopardize his chance to place.

Moving on the boys who are actually in the list, we will begin with a group of contestants whom we dubbed as the “The Boy Band” (because they share a trait of cuteness that usually belongs to a boy band member). When this competition began, Korea was virtually negligible and was not even on our bubbling up list. But as the day passed, we start to notice something special from him. His cuteness is slightly unconventional and different from the other two Boy Band members as it has a mix of edginess which makes him appealing not only for commercial but also high fashion market. So far Philippines has always been successful every time they send a commercial cute-looking contestant (2006 and 2010) and they repeat that winning formula this year. Philippines is indeed the strongest Asian contestant this year and with Mister International historically tends to favor his kind of look, he should comfortably make the cut. The last of "The Boy Band", Indonesia is the only one without any unique distinction. He does not possess Korea edginess and commercially is not as strong as Philippines. Regardless he has done everything right throughout the competition and should be still a solid contender for at least Top 15 placement.

Out of all Latinas competing this year, traditional powerhouses Venezuela and Mexico are the two who likely will make the cut. Face-wise Venezuela is a major downgrade from his predecessors. His saving grace is obviously his body, one of the best in the competition, which is reflected in the scoring process of our Leaderboard (Venezuela was not in our Top 15 list until the very last minute when the score of Best Body category added and he is suddenly propelled to 14th place). Mexico is a complete package and under other circumstances he should sail smoothly to Top 15 or even Top 5. The problem this time is the circulation of pictures that suggest him being a gay and that may not sit well with a panel of conservative minded judges. Personally we think a contestant sexual orientation should not be considered as a factor in judging. Hopefully the judges will share the same open mind view as us and score Mexico fairly.

The strongest region of the year, Europe dominates with 9 names on the final list, including 4 names on Top 5. From the north to the south, from the west to the east, the old continent treats us with a lot of promising candidates this time. On the north, the tall, charming, and elegant Norway is a true epitome of classic European beauty. On the east, Slovak Republic maybe petite compared to his fellow competitors, but he makes for that with one of the most handsome face in the competition and a great physique. On the west, Ireland reminds us to a hero from an action movie, a handsome and athletic man with a wild bad boy persona. Lastly, on the south, Spain could very well be the next model for Abercrombie & Fitch campaign. Being build and good looking, he totally fits for that role.

Finally it is time to address the top of the top pack of our Leaderboard. It is interesting to note that the Top 3 of our Leaderboard is composed by the contestants whom each voted as the best in our 3 special award categories. And indeed each of them excels in a specific category. Slovenia strong point is his face. He is a true modern day Adonis, a pure and perfect beauty with almost no facial flaw. Sweden strong point is his strong masculine persona. With a very strong facial structure, buffed body, and manly charisma he is a symbol of a true gentleman. Brazil strong point is his toned, build, and exotic tan body. Being a half Asian also helps him to stand out in the crowd with his distinct (and gorgeous) half Brazilian half Asian look. It is totally not easy to pick one of them as the winner. But after all scores tallied, the top spot of this Leaderboard belongs to Brazil who has the most balanced quality of face, body, and charisma, and therefore should make a great Mister International winner.

With all being said, it is time to wait before the new Mister International chosen tonight. Good luck to all contestants, their supporters, and their national directors! May the best man win!

Special thanks to Yutha Diantra for the terrific banner!

Mister International 2011 Love It or Leave it

By Ayus Wijaya

Normally I only write this "Love It or Leave It" article after the final is over and normally I only write things that happen on the final night. But this year supposedly best ever Mister International edition (the contestants are exceptionally strong this year and host city Bangkok itself is a very beautiful place) was ruined with some quibbles that makes me itchy to write a complain about it. But before I lament about those quibbles, let's talk about the good side of the pageant first, starting with ......

The boys during the press conference

Love It
Things I like

The sponsor awards
There are two reasons why I love the sponsor awards. First, it is a nice way to give a special recognition to contestants with exceptional qualities. And second, while it may not directly influence the actual result on the final night, it can act as an oracle and gives us insight on which contestants are favored by the organization and will likely have high placement. Just make sure that the number of awards given is not too excessive, otherwise the essence of the awards itself will be decreasing.

The diverse activities
Other positive aspect from this year pageant is the variety and diversity of the activity provided by the local organizer for the contestants. From trekking with the elephants to visiting flood victims to touring the ancient, hundred years old temples, the Mister International 2011 participants will surely have some interesting experiences and some nice memories that they can bring back to their home countries.

Strongman Britain with Denmark and Portugal

The rain of Gods
Perhaps the biggest salvation for this year edition is the significant improvement of the contestant qualities. In my opinion, all of the previous editions of Mister International only featured mediocre batch at best. This is why I only rank this pageant in the third place, behind Mister World and Manhunt International who are better in the terms of quantity and quality of contestants. But this year seems to be the exception as Mister International finally produces a strong batch of competitors. In fact, as far as I recall, this is the first time I think Mister International has better contestants than Manhunt International of the same year. This is of course a delicious treat for us, pageant fans, as it promises us a very competitive contest. Hopefully this is not only one time fluke and this positive trend will continue on for the upcoming editions.

Handsome with a Purpose - the contestants visiting flood victims

Leave It
Things I dislike

Social media ... deactivated
They have an official website, an official Facebook page and an official Twitter account, but none of them is properly updated. Even worse, their official website was going down several months prior to the pageant and until today it is still down. This shows how Mister Singapore Organization either doesn’t have enough finance or simply doesn’t care about its own media, which supposedly should serve as a source of information and interaction between the organizer and the fans of the pageant. In this era of modern technology and communication, social media has now become an effective way for branding, including for pageant. If Mister International ever wants to increase its popularity and make itself more relevant among the fans, social media is a simple and cheap, yet very effective way to do it.

No more official pictures
Another step back for this year edition is the missing tradition of having official pictures of all contestants in formal wear, swimsuit, and national costumes. If it is not for other media like Belleza Venezolana and Thai Catwalk covering the pageant, we may never get complete pictures of the contestants in swimsuit and national costumes. This time we are still lucky enough to enjoy those pictures, thanks to the media I mention above, but still this should have been the organizer responsibility to provide fans with such pictures. Imagine if there is no other media covering the pageant this time, wouldn’t we have been left with no pictures at all.

Who says man doesn't need pampering?

The very late arrival
With all respects to Colombia and Nigeria, I think their participation on the contest should have been declined by the organizer as both of them were late, not only one day, not only two days, but a week in the competition. They are being allowed to compete even after severely late would be totally unfair for other contestants who have arrived on the scheduled time as these contestants have sacrificed their time and personal schedule to arrive in Bangkok on time. It is a pity because Nigeria is actually my favorite, and I actually hope to see him in the semifinal as black African contestant is barely represented at Mister International semifinal line up. But now with him being late, his inclusion in the semifinal would be even more unfair to the other contestants.

The contestants at The Golden Temple

The competition of the national directors
My last complain about Mister International would be about some of the national directors joining the pageant activities. A pageant is a competition for the contestants and not for their national directors. Therefore, the national directors should not be allowed to join the pageant activities. It is of course unfair that some contestants are still getting direct help from their national directors during the pageants days, while the others are not. Furthermore, the national director presence at the pageant activities will make the pageants seem less legitimate and fair as people may get suspicious that these national directors are working the organizer and the judges to enhance the chance of their respective contestant to make the cut. This may be suspicion only and may never actually happen. But wouldn’t it better to eliminate any reason that will potentially make people suspicious about the pageant credibility.

The men and the elephant

Overall I still have high hopes for Mister International 2011, especially for the result, tough there are a few things that I wish would have been done differently. Hopefully tomorrow night they will pick a worthy winner which shouldn't be too hard considering they have a very strong of batch to pool from.

Mister International 2011 Final Leaderboard Part 1

In our tradition, the penultimate day in a pageant is the time when we will reveal our Final Leaderboard. But before we reveal the Final Leaderboard for Mister International 2011, which final will take place tomorrow, we would like to bring you to see "behind-the-scene" of making the Final Leaderboard in this part.

As in other Leaderboards, the first stage in making this Leaderboard is to invite some of our members to serve as the judges. These members are chosen based on their reputable knowledge and expertise in the respective pageant. They would then asked to submit their Top 15 choice and rank them from 1 to 15. The contestant who places first in a judge's list will be assigned 15 points, second place 14 points, third place 13 points, and so on until 1 point given to the 15th placer. The points from all judges will then tabulated and presented as the basic or the overall score for the Leaderboard. The reason it is called as overall score is that because the judging for this part is based on the overall impression of each contestant by our judges.

For Mister International 2011 Final Leaderboard, we have 7 members serving as judges. Therefore the maximum points that a contestant can get is 105 (if he placed first in all judges list) while the minimum point is of course zero (if none of the judges put him in their list). After tabulating the points from these 7 judges, here is the initial rank of our Final Leaderboard based on their overall score.

The first set of score based on the overall impression of each contestant

In this initial rank, only 25 out of 33 contestants who receive at least 1 point from our judges. The other 8 are left out with zero point and therefore eliminated from the list. Also based on the overall impression, Brazil leads the rank with 97 points, followed closely by Slovenia and Sweden. Also in the Top 15 rank of the list are other favorites such as Czech Republic, Mexico, Philippines, and Spain. The last spot on the Top 15 rank belongs to Portugal with 15 points.

Normally once we have this rank, we will immediately publish it as the Leaderboard. But starting from Mister International 2011 we will change the format. Inspired by the scoreboard system of Miss World 2011, we will know consider specific qualities of the contestants as part of the judging. As such, earlier this week we have presented our Top 10 list for Best Body, Best Model, and Best Face category, and now these lists will be also translated as points for the Leaderboard. For each category, the points will be given as the following :

1st place - 15 points
2nd place - 12 points
3rd place - 10 points
4th place - 8 points
5th place - 6 points
6th place - 5 points
7th place - 4 points
8th place - 3 points
9th place - 2 points
10th place - 1 point

For the first category Best Face, we are looking for the contestants with exceptionally gorgeous and stunning face. The winner for this category is Slovenia with Slovak Republic in second and Norway in third. As soon as the points for this category added to the Leaderboard, the rank changes as the following :

The second set of score after Best Face score added to the Leaderboard

Having won the maximum points for considered as the most handsome face in the batch, Slovenia now takes the leads. Slovak Republic is now in the Top 5 (5th place) while Mexico is down to Top 10 (6th place). Norway breaks his 11th place tie with Indonesia and is now up in the 9th place.

Now into the second category Best Model. This category is focusing on how impressive and charismatic a contestant while performing on the runway. The winner for this category is Sweden with Slovenia in second and Brazil in third. Now we have three sets of score in to the Leaderboard, and the rank changes as the following :

The third set of score after Best Model score added to the Leaderboard

While Slovenia remains as the leader of the rank, top model Sweden now overtakes Brazil to claim the runner up position. Norway and Denmark, both ranks high for this category, moves up one placement each to 8th and 9th place respectively while Philippines is down from 8th place to 10th place.

There is still one more category to consider, Best Body. As its name suggests, having an athletic, toned, and rippled body is a must to score in this category. The winner for this category is Brazil with Sweden in second and Spain in third. Will this last set of score make a significant change? Will there be newcomers in our Top 15 list? Will Slovenia remain on the top? We will reveal all of these in the next part of our Final Leaderboard. Stay tuned!
