A Decade Through Miss Earth

10 things that you may, or may not, know about Miss Earth through its first decade.

• The first edition of Miss Earth final to be held outside Philippines is Miss Earth 2010 which was held in Vietnam. However, it was not the first time Miss Earth activities to be held outside Philippines. In 2007, several Miss Earth contestants were invited to visit Vietnam and participate in several official preliminary activities there, despite the final event was still held in Philippines.

• In its 10 years of history, Miss Earth has already changed its official crown twice. The first crown was only used in its inaugural edition in 2001. The second crown was used in 2002 until 2008 before it was replaced once again by the third and the current crown in 2009. The first and the second crown of Miss Earth is designed by Filipino designer Amel Papa while the current crown is designed by environmentalist jewelry designer Ramona Haar and is made of recycled precious metals.

• No African woman has won the Miss Earth title on the final night. The closest one is Winfred Adah Omwakme from Kenya who won Miss Earth Air (1st Runner Up) title in 2002 and later assumed Miss Earth 2002 title when the original winner, Dzelja Glavovic from Bosnia & Herzegovina, was dethroned in May 2003. Aside from Omwakme, the only African woman who was close enough to win the title on the final night was Miriam Odemba from Tanzania who also won Miss Earth Air title in 2008.

• The country with the most placements at Miss Earth is Philippines with a total of 8 placements (a not so surprising fact considering Philippines at Miss Earth is what USA at Miss Universe like). While the country with the most placements at Miss Earth elemental court is Brazil. Up until now the South American national already has 2 Miss Earth (in 2004 and 2009), 2 Miss Earth Air (in 2001 and 2003), and 1 Miss Earth Fire (2008), making a total of 5 elemental Queens.

• The longest placement streak record at Miss Earth so far belongs to Philippines and Venezuela, each with 6 consecutive placements. Philippines made its streak during 2001 - 2006, while Venezuela made its streak during 2005 - 2010. If Venezuela placed again this year, it would break the record with 7 consecutive placements.

• Interestingly, Philippines and Venezuela were also the two nations with the most award winnings at Miss Earth. Philippines leads with 6 awards (3 Miss Photogenic, 2 Best in Long Gown, and 1 Best in Swimsuit) followed closely by Venezuela with 5 awards (3 Best in Swimsuit and 2 Best in Long Gown).

• Like Miss World, Miss Earth also has its own slogan “Beauty for a Cause”. And just like Miss World, Miss Earth also has its own official award based on the slogan. However, unlike the “Beauty with a Purpose” award which was given annually at Miss World since 2005, the “Beauty for a Cause” award at Miss Earth was only given twice so far, one in 2003 and the other in 2007.

• Traditionally the Miss Photogenic award at Miss Earth was voted and decided by the press photographers covering the event. In 2009, the format was changed and for the first time ever the public could vote via internet for the winner of this award. Tereza Budkova from Czech Republic became the first ever Miss Photogenic winner at Miss Earth determined by the public.

• Two men and one woman have served as the host of Miss Earth final for three times, the record for Miss Earth hosts so far. They are model Marc Nelson (in 2002, 2004, and 2009), television host Ariel Ureta (in 2003, 2005, and 2006), and last but not least is Miss Earth 2004 from Brazil herself, Priscilla Meirelles (in 2006, 2007, and 2008).

• Miss Earth 2006 final was originally intended to be held in Chile, but at the last minute the local organizer could not meet the requirements and the pageant was moved back to Philippines. Interestingly, whether it is a coincidence or not, Chile won that year. This year, Miss Earth 2011 final was also moved back from Thailand to Philippines due to the massive flooding in Thailand. Could it mean that Thailand will win this year pageant?
