Interview with Miss Michigan USA 2012 Kristen Danyal

By Dyra Agus Prasetyo

Miss Michigan USA is independently conducted and produced by Proctor Productions LLC. Their first Miss USA victory was in 1990 and it was a notable one because Carole Gist was the first African-American to win the title. Following in her footsteps, Kenya Moore, also African-American, won the title in 1993 and their Rima Fakih won it in 2010. Michigan is one of only twelve states to have had more than one Miss USA and has had the ninth highest number of Semifinalists. They have not, however, been successful in gaining other awards. And now a former Miss Michigan Teen USA, Kristen Danyal from Sterling Heights will try on her second chance for chasing the Diamond Nexus Labs for the 2012 as she had done in 2009 at Miss Teen USA.

1. If you would like to describe your self in one word, and what word would it be, and why?
If I were to describe myself in one word, it would be humble. I think this word best describes me because I do not expect anything to be given to me so I work hard for everything I get. I am always appreciative and never forget where it came from. Also, I am quick to extend myself to others whenever they may need me.

2. How many time have you participated in the state pageant?
I participated in Miss Michigan USA only one time. However, I participated in Miss Michigan Teen USA in 2009 and won that pageant as well. I am the first girl from Michigan to have won both titles.

3. You won Miss Michigan Teen USA 2009 title and now you are the reigning Miss Michigan USA 2012 do you think that winning the state pageant is a gift or a responsibility?
Winning both pageants are obviously gifts from God. I believe he put me on a path he knew I would enjoy. But like anything God gives you, it is then your responsibility to cherish the job that come along with it. The gift God gave me is not a crown, nor is it a sash. Rather, it is a power he instilled me to serve the world and be the best me I can be.

4. You were top 15 Miss Teen USA 2009, right? Now that you compete at Miss USA will you use a different strategy or the same one as you used at Miss Teen USA ?
I plan to use the same strategy as I did at Miss Teen USA. My strategy was to stay true to myself. I remember walking out in a Michigan jersey and jean shorts while the other girls were in dresses and high heels. The judges do not have a criteria to base their winner off of, so to try to be what you think they want is tiring and pointless. My director always tells me, "Different judges, different winner." The beauty about this USA system is that each winner is so different yet is always relatable.

5. We know that the swimsuit round is apart of the MUO pageant, meanwhile there are some countries a woman isn't allowed wearing swimsuit in a public cause they think that it can demean women. Do you think so?
I do not think wearing a swimsuit for competition is demeaning to women. If I am a healthy woman and work out, I want to be able to flaunt my hard work. My body is one of the only things I can control and it takes a lot of discipline to be fit. It is very empowering to us pageant girls to finally show off the results of all the discipline and dedication we go through to be in shape. I am obviously subjecting myself to a "swimsuit round", so clearly I do not feel degraded and nobody else should feel that for me. If I thought it was demeaning I would not do it and everybody else who competes has that choice too.

6. According to you, What is the most important thing to be Miss USA, The Beauty, The Brain, or The Behavior?
First of all, I value the tradition there is behind Miss USA. It is probably one of the truest forms of a beauty pageant there is left today. I think it is so important for Miss USA to be a knock-out beauty. However, Miss USA is like an ambassador and she must have the brain capacity to represent the brand with intelligence, dignity, and honor. If she has that, then she will naturally have good behavior when she attends functions as Miss USA. So, overall, I think that Beauty, Brains, and Behavior are equally as important; I couldn't choose just one.

7. You know, this year will be tough year for Miss USA pageant, so many beautiful contestants, do you get any pageant training from your state director? Would you like tell us a lil bit about your preparation to the Pageant?

The preparation is going. I do not want to give away too much, but I must say, I have a fabulous team behind me.

8. Which one is more important, winning the Miss USA crown or making friendships with the other 50 contestants?
The goal at the end of the day is winning the Miss USA crown. I am not going to sugar coat it and say that it is more important to make friends with the other 50 contestants, but that is still definitely something I want. I do not want to go there and focus so much on what's going on around me that I lose sight of what I am really there for. However, I think if you cannot make friends with the other contestants, you wouldn't have a chance of winning Miss USA, let alone be a good Miss USA if you did win.

9. Why do you think that the Judges should choose you as the next Miss USA or even Miss Universe?
I think the judges should chose me as Miss USA because I know I am the perfect person to represent the Miss USA title. I have accomplished a lot at a young age, but I still have goals. I am truly engaged in every thing I do wether it be big or little. I value beauty, but I know that it is deeper than the surface. I think that every emotion I feel shows when I speak and I know that people feel it. Poise and elegance always commands attention, and I strive to always have that. I will deliver the night of June 3rd, and that is why the judges should pick me.

10. Last but not least, how do you describe a creature named " A Man"?
"A Man"- n. a-man : God's rough draft of woman.

Special thanks to the “Michigander” Kristen Danyal and also the Proctor Productions LLC for making this interview is possible. We wish Kristen the very best of luck at Miss USA 2012 :)

Interview with Miss Minnesota USA 2012 Nitaya Panemalaythong

By Dyra Agus Prasetyo

The words captivating, charismatic, and determined only begin to describe Nitaya Panemalaythong. Born in a refugee camp in Thailand, Nitaya came to America as in infant in 1986. Her family moved from Minneapolis, to other locations in Minnesota, then North Carolina, before Nitaya returned to Minnesota in 2004. Her path to the Miss Minnesota USA crown is simply amazing! She won her title in her first pageant competition, and is the first Asian American to hold the Miss Minnesota USA title.

1. If you would like to describe your self in one word, and what word would it be, and why?
Thriver because of how I grew up and how it's made me who I am today.

2. How many time have you participated in the state pageant?
This was my first pageant ever!

3. What are the aims / goals / your motivations so that you were trying hard to conquer your title and win a right to represent the state to Miss USA pageant?
My goal was to ALWAYS be myself and my motivation was my friends and family who have supported me not only through out the whole process but through different times of my life.

4. Now, everybody knows that you are the queen of your state in the USA system, do you think that winning the state pageant is a gift or a responsibility?
I think it's both. It's a gift because no ONE person is exactly perfect for this role. You were chosen by a group of judges so it's a gift that they chose you for that particular year. It's also a responsibility because you are now a role model for anyone and everyone who comes across your path from now on so you need to make sure that you take it seriously.

5. What is the biggest changing of your self between before your were crowned and after the crowning?
I don't think anything has changed about me besides the fact that I'm a lot busier now and have to dress up more! (I'm a t-shirt and jeans type of girl). Otherwise, I haven't changed who I am nor do I ever plan on changing who I am.

6. We know that the swimsuit round is apart of the MUO pageant, meanwhile there are some countries a woman isn't allowed wearing swimsuit in a public cause they think that it can demean women. Do you think so?
Absolutely not. I feel that a woman should be able to dress to HER own comfort level and not any one else's. If she wants to cover up than she is more than welcome to and if she wants to be in a swimsuit, I think that is fine, too. However, I understand that some cultures in certain countries do not feel that way still so I feel that if you are visiting a certain country, you should definitely be respectful of the culture. But hopefully through time, ALL women are able to dress to their comfort level no matter what country she's from.

7. You know, this year will be tough year for Miss USA pageant, so many beautiful contestants, do you get any pageant training from your state director? Would you like tell us a lil bit about your preparation to the Pageant?
Yes, absolutely! The directors of Future Productions are amazing and they definitely do what they can to help you prepare for Miss USA. They are really great at making sure all the details are finalized like making sure you're prepared for interviews and appearances, etc. all the way through Miss USA. I am very thankful that I have great directors who are there with me and will be there for me when I go to Miss USA and throughout my reign AND I'm sure after!

8. Which one is more important, winning the Miss USA crown or making friendships with the other 50 contestants?
It would be amazing to win the Miss USA 2012 title but I think what is more important is what you get out of the experience whether it's making friendships or networking at appearances. You'll take what you want out of the experience and it's up to you as to how you decide to go into this competition because at the end of the day, there can only be one winner.

9. What is the biggest present that you have ever received?
I think the judges should choose me because I would represent a group in the US that hasn't been represented in the Miss USA pageant before and that's being a first generation refugee coming to America. Not only that but I have lived in the Midwest, East Coast/South and West Coast so I can technically represent most of the US : )

Special thanks to the Assistant Director of Future Productions, Libby Watkins, and Nitaya herself for making this interview is possible. We wish Nana the very best of luck at Miss USA 2012 :)

Interview with Miss Maryland USA 2012 Nana Meriwether

By Dyra Agus Prasetyo

Born on 24 May 1985, Nana Meriwether, Miss Maryland USA 2012, is an accomplished athlete, student and humanitarian. Nana grew up in Maryland and attended the prestigious Sidwell Friends School that has on its record alumni and current students: Chelsea Clinton, Al Gore Jr, the Obama daughters, the Biden’s grandchildren, and the Roosevelt and Nixon children. In high school, she participated in Varsity Volleyball, Basketball and Track and Field. Nana is one of a few Sidwell students to ever earn 12 varsity letters, having played a varsity sport all throughout her high school career.

1. If you would like to describe your self in one word, and what word would it be, and why? Dynamic! I am a very ambitious, self motivated, hard working multitask-er who has aspired to and succeeded in conquering some pretty major goals in life. For example, when I attended UCLA (which is academically now ranked the 11th best university in the WORLD, Go Bruins!), I did not just work hard and excel in the classroom as an honor roll student, but I earned NCAA All American Volleyball honors 2 years in a row! After college while simultaneously running the international non-profit I co-founded, I played professional volleyball overseas in Puerto Rico and trained for the 2008 Olympics in Colorado Springs. Today, I am not just running for Miss USA, but I am concurrently finishing premedical science classes and applying for admission to medical school.

2. How many time have you participated in the state pageant?
I began my journey in 2006 when I ran for Miss California USA 2007. Placing as high as 1st Runner Up in 2010, I tried 4 times in California. In 2011 after I completed post graduate studies at The University of Southern California, I moved back home to Maryland and decided to compete for Miss Maryland USA 2012! I tried a total of 5 times to finally represent my beautiful home state of Maryland!

3. What are the aims / goals / your motivations so that you were trying hard to conquer your title and win a right to represent the state to Miss USA pageant?
When preparing for my state title I broke the competition down. Every day of training I would focus on certain parts like interview, working out, walking etc in order to make the journey a little less intimidating. To help motivate myself to work hard and prepare, I kept in mind certain goals. For example, I really wanted to win my state title so that I could help leverage my non-profit The Meriwether Foundation, to more national recognition. I am passionate about helping better rural communities in Southern Africa and winning the title of Miss Maryland USA meant I could more greatly bring awareness to the plight of those less fortunate overseas.

4. Now, everybody knows that you are the queen of your state in the USA system, do you think that winning the state pageant is a gift or a responsibility?
From following the Miss USA system year after year, I have come to find the role of a titleholder to be a full time job. You have several appearances weekly and now because of the growth of social media outlets where fans and supporters have more access to titleholders, you find yourself fulfilling responsibilities as a titleholder even on your “time off”. Although it is a lot of hard work, it is a job I never want to give up! It is a gift that 51 women out of millions get to experience each year and I am truly humbled and count my blessing everyday that I am Miss Maryland USA 2012!

5. What is the biggest changing of your self between before your were crowned and after the crowning?
The biggest change I have gone through is I have grown more mentally tough. I think people expect titleholders to turn a blind eye to the negative and plain hurtful comments that are posted about us everyday, but they are hard to ignore. Although I have used all the negativity said about me to help motivate me on my journey, I still urge people before you press enter to bash and bully anyone of my fellow contestants and I, please remember we are human beings just following our dreams. You never know what someone has been through and how damaging a comment can really be. So in all the biggest change I have gone through is I have learned how to use negative comments to help drive me to the crown!

6. We know that the swimsuit round is apart of the MUO pageant, meanwhile there are some countries a woman isn't allowed wearing swimsuit in a public cause they think that it can demean women. Do you think so?
We must all be more sensitive to other cultures. It is not my place to judge other people and countries who based on culture, personal or religious beliefs do not allow wearing a swimsuit. I instead look to embrace such differences in opinion and use them to learn and broaden my global outlook.

7. You know, this year will be tough year for Miss USA pageant, so many beautiful contestants, do you get any pageant training from your state director? would you like tell us a lil bit about your preparation to the Pageant?
My team is simply the best!! My directors have been doing this for years and also direct New Jersey, Rhode Island, Illinois, and Delaware. I have full confidence I will be most expertly prepared come Miss USA. I have a decorated coach (Michelle Holmes) and meet frequently with my state directors to ready the little details that come with competing. I am also beginning to up my workout regime and clean out my diet. I played volleyball for UCLA and ended up leading my team to the NCAA Final Four. The discipline and work ethic needed for competing at such an elite level in volleyball mirrors my preparation for Miss USA. I am excited for this journey and for the hard work to come with my experienced team!

8. Which one is more important, winning the Miss USA crown or making friendships with the other 50 contestants?
I don’t think you have to pick. I think you can cherish both. I am always turned off by contestants who are not humble and respectful of others. Even in my volleyball days playing for UCLA, in Puerto Rico and training for the Olympics, I have always respected my opponents. To take on a harsh competitive agenda where you vilify your opponents only hurts you. I take on the mindset that I am not competing against the 50 other contestants, I am competing against myself and working hard to put the best version of myself out there. As a result, I am very focused on winning the Miss USA crown and on the way I know I am going to make the friends that will last me a lifetime. These are the women who will be at my medical school graduation, my wedding, my children birthdays

9. What is the biggest present that you have ever received?
The best present I ever received was the gift of education from my parents. They grew up segregated against but used education a route to a better life. My dad is now a doctor my mom has na law and business degree and she is a CPA. I was blessed to go to the same school as Chelsea Clinton, Al Gore Jr, the Obamas etc then I went to UCLA for undergrad and did postgraduate work at University of Southern California. Now I'm applying to medical school.

Special thanks to the State Director of Miss Maryland USA and Nana herself for making this interview is possible. We wish Nana the very best of luck at Miss USA 2012 :)

Interview with Miss Texas USA 2012 Brittany Lynn Booker

By Dyra Agus Prasetyo

Our interview with Brittany Lynn Booker, beloved daughter of Glenn and Robin Booker, a statuesque blonde from Houston, and the reigning Miss Texas USA 2012. On 4 September 4 2011, she was chosen from the field of 123 outstanding contestants to be Miss Texas USA 2012. The stunning, 5’11”, green-eyed model will represent the Lone Star State in the most prestigious of national pageants, Miss USA. More than just a beauty queen, Brittany excelled academically and graduated from Bay Area Christian School ranking third in her class and was a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She is currently a junior at University of Houston, majoring in Psychology/Human Development and Family Studies.

1. If you would like to describe yourself in one word, and what word would it be, and why?
Loving. My goal is to show love to everyone I meet. I wish that every person no matter who they are or where they came from would feel loved. We are all the same. No matter the color of our skin, no matter how much money we have, and no matter our background, everyone deserves to be loved.

2. How many time have you participated in the state pageant?
Only once :) This year was my first time to compete!

3 What are the aims / goals / your motivations so that you were trying hard to conquer your title and win a right to represent the state to Miss USA pageant ?
I had many goals that I worked towards as I prepared for Miss Texas USA, but most importantly I worked toward finding out exactly who I am and what I stand for! I try to be the same person rain or shine. I don't put on an act or try to change myself, but work to better myself and become the best me that I can be! We are all unique and different in our own ways and the best thing we can do is embrace who we are and be confident in it.

4. Now, everybody knows that you are the queen of your state in the USA system, do you think that winning the state pageant is a gift or a responsibility?
In my opinion it is definitely a little of both. It is a huge gift, and I am very blessed to have the opportunity to represent the state of Texas not only at the Miss USA pageant but everyday and in everything I do. I have had so many amazing opportunities and been able to do so many wonderful things with great charities and people that I would have never had the chance to do if not for winning Miss Texas USA. It is also a very big responsibility! With the title also comes the job of being Miss Texas USA, not only on appearances but in every aspect of life. As it has been said, "To whom much is given, much is required." State title holders are held to a very high standard and many things are expected of you if you get the chance to represent your state, but I definitely think that the gift and the responsibility are both wonderful blessings!

5. What is the biggest changing of yourself between before your were crowned and after the crowning?
I have learned a lot about who I am as a person. I have learned to focus on what is really important in life and what matters most! Another thing I have learned is that family is one of the most precious gifts we have been given. They stand by you no matter what, support you when you need it, and pick you up when you are down. I have learned to cherish my family and spend every free moment I get with them reminding them how much they mean to me!

6. We know that the swimsuit round is apart of the MUO pageant, meanwhile there are some countries a woman isn't allowed wearing swimsuit in a public because they think that it can demean women . Do you think so?
I do not think the swimsuit competition demeans women. As long as it is done in a tasteful manner and only with the utmost respect. The swimsuit competition shows a woman's determination and drive. It shows that they can set goals for themselves and are willing work hard to accomplish them.

7. You know, this year will be tough year for Miss USA pageant, so many beautiful contestants, do you get any pageant training from your state director? Would you like tell us a lil bit about your preparation to the Pageant?
I do have wonderful sponsors that are helping me prepare for the Miss USA pageant! I am just working my hardest to excel at every level of the competition and preparing for anything.

8. Which one is more important, winning the Miss USA crown or making friendships with the other 50 contestants?
I am definitely in it to win it! However, I am so excited about making friends with the other girls, and I think it is an important part of the whole Miss USA experience!

9. Why do you think that the Judges should choose you as the next Miss USA or even Miss Universe?
I should be chosen as the next Miss USA and hopefully even Miss Universe, because I am ready for the job and the responsibility. I would use the title to touch every person that I could and make a difference in their lives. I am very passionate and put my heart into every task that I am given and strive to do my best at it! If I am blessed with the title of Miss USA I will take all of my responsibilities seriously and do my best to make a difference and represent my country well!

10. As Texas is a pageant powerhouse in USA pageant system, Do you feel the pressure to represent the state?
There is no question that Texas has been a powerhouse for many years, and there is definitely some pressure that comes along with that. However, I am a competitive girl, and I love pressure. It just drives me to work harder and strive to become better every day.

Special thanks to the National Director of Miss Texas USA and Brittany herself for making this interview is possible. We wish Brittany the very best of luck at Miss USA 2012 :)
