Back to Past Moment : Miss Native American and Miss Latin Mexico

By Ayus Wijaya

In international competition, a contestant is normally a representative of a country or a region. But at Miss International 2003, held in Tokyo, Japan, there was a unique case where two contestants did not represent a country or a region, but a particular ethnicity, instead.

The first of these two delegates is Lana-la Trell Onque Henry who represented the Native American community (or more colloquially known as Indian people) in United States and competed as Miss Native American. Lana-la is a woman of Choctaw Indian origin who was 23 years old by the time she competed at Miss International 2003. She is 180 cm tall.

The second delegate is Lorena Ruiz Martinez who represented the Latin community in Mexico and competed as Miss Latin Mexico. Lorena was was 23 years old by the time she competed at Miss International 2003. She is 162 cm tall. Unlike Lana-la who actually represented a minority ethnicity in her country, I found Lorena's participation as nothing but an excuse for Mexico to send two delegates. After all, most of the Mexcian are Latin people, so why should they have a special representative in the pageant. One delegate wearing Miss Mexico sash is more than enough to represent all the Latin people in Mexico.

I was trying to find more pictures of these two women during their pageant days but the only picture that I could find is this group picture above, courtesy of Pageantopolis. In that picture Miss Native American is the second girl from left on the back row while Miss Latin Mexico is the sixth girl from right on the back row. Both of them eventually failed to make the cut. It was the first and the only time a delegate competing in the pageant as a representative of an ethnicity. Since then there are no more ethnicity representatives at Miss International pageant.

Stay tuned for more Back to Past Moment news, where we will compile various memorable pageant moments and events from the past!

True Beauty (Chapter 1)

What is True Beauty? True beauty is when someone is not only beautiful outside but also beautiful inside. A person who does not look beautiful but also does beautiful things. In this chapter, we pay tribute for those people and take them as our inspiration in life - that something is only truly beautiful when it has a beautiful meaning for the others.

Maria Julia Mantilla (Miss World 2004)
A year in the life of a Miss World titleholder is always a busy one, including for Miss World 2004 from Peru, Maria Julia “Maju” Mantilla. The picture above depicts one highlight in her reign when she and Hong Kong actor Jackie Chan participated in a humanitarian visit on April 2005 to a village near Banda Aceh devastated by the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami. She visited the village to support the tsunami victims and to raise awareness on tsunami reconstruction.

Zukhriatul Hafiza (1st Runner Up Puteri Indonesia 2009)
As the 1st Runner Up of Puteri Indonesia 2009, Zukhriatul Hafiza took the official title of Puteri Indonesia Lingkungan 2009 (Indonesian Princess of Environment), a title that translates not only on her sash but also on her actions during her reign. In the picture above, you can see her along with Papua children participated in a tree planting activity. The tree planting activity is part of her "green" visit to Timika, Papua on May 2010 where she shared and educated people there about the importance of environmental conservation as well as other "green" activities.

Nazanin Afshin-Jam (1st Runner Up Miss World 2003)
Iranian born and Canadian citizen Nazanin Afshin-Jam is truly a woman with a purpose. She is not only a mere beauty queen but also a human rights activist. One issue that she strongly opposes is the human rights abuses of women and children in Middle East. To that end, she founded Stop Child Executions (SCE) Campaign in 2008 and petition to help children inmates on death row. To date, SCE has managed to help save many lives. In April 2009, she was awarded the "Human Rights Hero Award" from UN Watch in Geneva, Switzerland for her continuous work in helping save children lives from death execution.

Ximena Navarette (Miss Universe 2010) and Miss Universe 2011 contestants
One of the most important event in Miss Universe history is perhaps the announcement of philanthropic partnership between Miss Universe Organization and Operation Smile, an international children medical charity, to help raise awareness for children born with facial deformities such as cleft lips and cleft palates. As part of the partnership, no other than the reigning Miss Universe 2010 Ximena Navarrete herself, along with four Miss Universe 2011 contestants, Priscila Machado (Brazil), Luo Zilin (China), Vanessa Gonçalves (Venezuela), and Shamcey Supsup (Philippines), volunteered on an Operation Smile medical mission in Sao Paulo, Brazil, showing that Miss Universe is not only about superficial beauties but also about the endless philanthropic work behind it.

Mister International 2011 contestants
Following the footsteps of its female counterpart, male pageant also started to contribute and participate more in humanitarian works. An eample was set by the Mister International Organization when they asked their contestants to participate in a humanitarian visit to the victims of the massive flood in Bangkok, Thailand as they supported and delivered some donation for these people. In the picture above, you can see some of these handsome men with the victims of the flood took a photograph together.

Mister Sweden 2011 Marco Djelevic Virriat shares his experience at Mister International 2011. Enjoy the interview!

Bio
Full Name : Marco Djelevic Virriat
National Title : Mister Sweden International 2011
Age : 21
Height : 185 cm
Weight : 81 kg
Achievement at Mister International 2011 :
Fourth Runner Up (5th place), Mister Photogenic award, and L-Men Best Body award

1 Would you please tell us about yourself and your life?
My name is Marco, I was born in the city of Lund, Sweden. I am a student in Stockholm (majoring in politics) at the moment and enjoy to play all kind of sports. I have many ambitions in my life right now, first of all to finish my education and I also want to start a modeling career around the world.

2 Who or what is the biggest inspiration in your life?
It’s my auntie Tanja Djelevic who is a personal trainer in Hollywood, one of the best in the world. During the time I grew up she taught me so much about life. She is the biggest inspiration for me.

3 If you can describe yourself in 5 words, which 5 worlds would you choose, and why?
Humble, funny, stubborn, ambitious, and charming. It's the combination that makes who I am and what I have become during all the years I have been in this world.

4 What activities you usually love to do in your spare time?
I play soccer a lot. I also play handball and of course I love to spend much time in the gym.

5 How do you feel about your accomplishment at the Mister International 2011 pageant?
I’m very happy and proud of my 5th place and winning the awards of ”Most Photogenic” and ”Best Body”. It was more than I have expected! I would like to thank my National Director Lisa Lents, who believed in me and gave me the opportunity to represent my country, Sweden. I’ve got all of the support I could get before and during the pageant. I’m very grateful for that!

6 What makes you motivated and interested in joining the pageant?
I have a winner attitude and I like to compete. That is my main motivation. But I also love to build new friendships and get a lot of new friends during the pageant. I miss everybody all the time. We got very close and have built strong friendships in a short time.

7 How did you prepare yourself for Mister International 2011?
I didn't have time to prepare so much, because I was very busy with my studies. But I tried to fix everything, train, and sleep well. It’s a trip that you have to prepare very well and put a lot of effort in it. Otherwise it's not possible to handle it.

8 Out of all the places you visited in Bangkok during the competition which one is the most memorable one for you?
Actually it is the temple we visited, I have never seen something like that. It was very cool and it gave me a special feeling.

9 What was the most exciting and the most frightening experience you had during the Mister International 2011 days?
It was standing on the stage during the final and waiting for the Top 16, Top 10, and Top 5 announcement. I was so nervous and excited!!

10 Who was your roommate during the competition? Did you both get along well?
I lived with Mads Mister Denmark during the time in Thailand. We got a long very well and we are almost like we come from the same country. After all, Sweden and Denmark are very close.

11 What is the best lesson you learn from your participation in Mister International 2011?
To enjoy every minute of the life, to think in the present, and not to think too much about tomorrow or yesterday.

12 You won both Mister Photogenic and L-Men Best Body awards. Which one of these awards make you feel more proud?
I knew even before I went to Bangkok that I have a fit body. In fact, since I was younger everybody has always told me that I have one of the best body they have seen in their lives. At Mister International however, there were a lot of guys whom I think have better bodies than me, so it was fun to win the Best Body award anyway. On the other hand, Mister Photogenic was felt so amazing to win. It showed me that I have a big chance to succeed with my modeling carrier. I has given me more confidence.

13 Now that the Mister International 2011 competition is over, what is your plan for your future?
I will finish my education first. It’s so important. And during the time I study, I’ll try to do modeling at the same time because I love it.

14 Last but not least what is your message to all your fans and supporters?
"To always stay humble and always be ambitious with everything."

Special thanks to Marco Djelevic Virriat himself and his national director Miss Lisa Lents of Miss & Mister of Denmark Organization who have given us an opportunity for this interview.

L-Men of The Year 2009 Steven Yoswara Talks About Mister International 2011 Part 1

Our interview with Steven was done in two parts. Prior to his departure to Bangkok, we actually have interviewed him via e-mail. But later we decided to do a post-pageant interview so that we can learn his experience at Mister International 2011 as well. Our second part of interview was done last week when we met with Steven and his girlfriend Wynne Melissa. It was such a fun interview and Steven definitely shared a lot of stories to us. So without further ado, let's get to it and find out what Steven has to say about Mister International 2011!

Bio
Full Name : Steven Yoswara
National Title : L-Men of The Year 2009
Birth place / date : Bandung, 30 July 1989
Fave song : "Give Me Everything" by Pitbull
Fave singer : Coldplay
Fave movie : All Marvel's movie
Fave actor / actress : Dwayne Johnsen "The Rock"
Fave book : One Piece
Fave sports : cycling and fitness
Personal motto : "Real happiness is seeing others get their happiness because of you"
Achievement at Mister International 2011 :
Second Runner Up (3rd place)

The Man Named Steven Yoswara

Before getting to the juicier part of Mister International topic, we decided to start our interview with questions about Steven himself and his personal life. So who is this man named Steven Yoswara? Steven was born as the the middle of three siblings, having one elder brother and one younger sister. He is currently a final year student at Art and Design Faculty of Maranatha University. After winning L-Men of The Year 2009, Steven life changes in that he started to pursue career in entertainment in addition to his education. Asked about his biggest motivation, Steven explained how his family plays the biggest role in his life. “They always support me in every activities and jobs that I do, whether it is my education or my career. My Mom supports me everyday by preparing healthy food for my meal and reminding me to have enough rest. My Dad always teaches me to have discipline and be responsible in everything that I do. My siblings are also very supportive. Without them I am really nothing.”

Steven describes himself as ‘an extrovert artist who is addicted with healthy lifestyle’, Art and sport are two inseparable things from Steven life. He is an art and photography lover who follows the healthy lifestyle. Sport is a routine activity for him, almost everyday he hits the gym. He also loves cycling as an alternate exercising activity. His favorite place for cycling is Lembang highland which is located not too far from the city of Bandung.

A Superhero and His Hero

“I want to become Captain America.” Short but certain, that is how Steven answered when we asked him with a ‘what if’ question “If you could become a character in a movie, which character you would like to be?” “Despite all his weakness, Captain America has a golden heart and a desire to help others without any hesitation. Remember, not because of the outlook. Good outlook is not always good, but good heart will always be good.”

The answer might not be too surprising considering heroism has been a part of Steven character since his childhood. Even when he was still a child, he once had an aspiration to become a soldier like in colossal war movies. But even a superhero still has his own personal hero. And for Steven, his hero and the biggest inspiration in his life is no other than his own father.
Personally for Steven, his father is a man without envy. “My father is always feeling grateful with his life. He is never jealous with other people and he is a very humble person. We can easily feel pity towards other people sorrows but only a few people can genuinely feel happy to see other people success. And my father is one of those few people.”

Experience is The Best Teacher

The wise man says ‘experience is the best teacher’. So for Steven himself, what is the most exciting experience in his entire life? Apparently Steven once had a chance to show his talent in front of people, but suddenly he could not do it. The worst part, a lot of people were watching him that time and some even had their camcorder ready. But at that critical moment, Steven could not bring himself to perform the talent that he could normally do easily.

Another precious experience for Steven is his participation at L-Men of The Year 2009. “L-Men of The Year has truly opened an opportunity for me to enter the entertainment industry, to meet with a lot of people from various walks of life, and to become an ambassador of healthy lifestyle and inspiration for many people.” Indeed becoming L-Men of The Year has truly become a life changing experience for Steven, including the unforgettable opportunity to represent our country, Indonesia, at the prestigious event of Mister International 2011.

Bangkok Calling

After getting personal with Steven and his life, we started to talk about Mister International 2011 days. Our first question is about his preparation. How did Steven prepared himself for the competition? “There are obviously a lot to prepare. The first one is physique preparation, I must increase my exercise intensity, become more selective in choosing menu for my meal, and take an adequate rest. I must also spend hours of time for fitting with several noted Indonesian designers, taking an interview class, and learning more about Indonesia to increase my knowledge about our beloved country.” Amazingly all those were done by Steven in the middle of his university exam weeks. “With such a hectic schedule, I of course could not take most of the exams in their scheduled time. Fortunately most of my lectures were very supportive and allowed me to take a substitute tests that I could take earlier so that I could still finish my academic obligation while preparing myself for Bangkok.”

However, despite all those preparation, Steven admitted to us that he indeed felt a bit nervous when he first saw his competitors in Bangkok. “Maybe because they are all so tall, so at first it was kinda intimidating.” But as days gone by, the feeling slowly disappeared because the contestants are so friendly and they all quickly get along well together. Even the competitive atmosphere is almost not felt because the contestants are very supportive and helpful towards each other. Of course everyone still wants to win, but it does not make them become hostile and mean to the others. The competition has become a chance for every contestant to compete fair and square while gaining new friendship from all around the world.

Stay tuned for the second part of our interview with Steven .... coming soon!

Mister Denmark 2011 Mads Madsen Talks About Mister International 2011

Mister Denmark 2011 Mads Madsen shares his experience at Mister International 2011. Enjoy the interview!

Bio
Full Name : Mads Madsen
National Title : Mister Denmark International 2011
Age : 19
Height : 187 cm
Weight : 77.5 kg
Achievement at Mister International 2011 :
Top 16 (12th place) and Mister Most Handsome award

1 Would you please tell us about yourself and your life?

My name is Mads Madsen, I’m 19 years old, and I’m from Copenhagen, Denmark. The place I grew up was amazing because my parents did everything they could to give me a good childhood. And they succeeded!
When I was a child I had all the opportunity to play football, tennis, dance, and just having fun. Since the place where I lived was a small neighborhood, I was also very close to all my friends.

2 Who or what is the biggest inspiration in your life?
A lot of people have become source of inspiration in my life, but if I have to pick one, it has to be my grandfather. He has been a great part of my life. The best time of my life is definitely when I stay at home with him, my sister, and my two cousins.
My sister, my two cousins and I have always been a team. All of us have matching tattoos of a little rose with the word ‘My Way’ written on the top of it. ‘My Way’ is our grandfather’s favorite song by Frank Sinatra. This is signifying our respect, honor, and love to our grandfather. I am not that much into tattoos because I am so very scared I will regret them later. But we did this for our grandfather because we love him very much.

3 If you can describe yourself in 5 words, which 5 worlds would you choose, and why?
• Social – I love to hanging out my friends, family, and meet new people.
• Creative – Since I was little I’ve always been very creative and colorful, and I work with graphic designs.
• Positive – I’m really positive the most of the time, I think if you just have a positive mind, a lot of things will work out for you in the last end.
• Kind – As long as I can remember back, I’ve always been the “kind” person who helps you if you’re in need.
• Healthy – I love being healthy and having an active life.

4 What activities you usually love to do in your spare time?
I love dancing and sports. I’ve danced standard and Latin dance for 11 years, break dance for 5 years, hip-hop and funk for 2 years, played American football for 1 year, and worked out for 4 years now.

5 How do you feel about your accomplishment at the Mister International 2011 pageant?
I’m so grateful to my National Director Lisa Lents for giving me the opportunity to represent something as prestigious as my own country, Denmark! And I’m so happy for my accomplishment in Mister International 2011, I got to the finals and ended at 12th place, and won the title “Mister Most Handsome 2011” so I’m proud and glad for the big experience!

6 What makes you motivated and interested in joining the pageant?
I get very motivated because it’s a great chance for me to get my modeling career on a higher level, and having to travel around the world and see so many beautiful things.

7 How did you prepare yourself for Mister International 2011?
I did not have much time to prepare myself. But we contacted my sponsors and got everything in place, then I did as I always do, worked out, eat healthily, and enjoyed some time with my family.

8 Out of all the places you visited in Bangkok during the competition which one is the most memorable one for you?
It must be the different resorts we visited. There were so many beautiful things, so it’s really difficult to pick one!

9 What was the most exciting and the most frightening experience you had during the Mister International 2011 days?
The most exciting experience was definitely when we visited the various resorts where we raced motocross, riding on elephants, and much more.
The most frightening experience that I had would be seeing the poor people sleeping in Bangkok’s streets and small alleys. When you see something like this, you get to appreciate your life more.

10 Who was your roommate during the competition? Did you both get along well?
My roommate was Mister Sweden, and we got along very good, it’s funny how Danish and Swedish is almost the same, but still we had a few issues understanding each other sometimes. So we talked English most of the time.

11 What is the best lesson you learn from your participation in Mister International 2011?
That you should never change who you are, always stay the same and be proud of your accomplishment.

12 Now that the Mister International 2011 competition is over, what is your plan for your future?
Right at the moment I’m doing a lot of different interviews, and casting for model and commercial work. Aside from that, I’m currently studying Media Graphics as well, in addition to the title as Web Integrator for web coding that I already earned.
With my education background, I guess I would still be suited to get a good job or start my own firm in case my modeling career does not work out.

13 Last but not least what is your message to all your fans and supporters?
Always smile, be happy and think positive. Your life automatically will be better.
I got that advice as a kid and every time I am ”sad” or feeling ”bad” I try to think positive as much as I possibly can. Not that it is going to cure you, but it is the first step to success, and a healthy life!
I’m also feel very grateful to my National Director and “Miss & Mister of Denmark” Organization, to my sponsors, friends and family. They’ve all helped me so much to make this trip a success!
Finally thanks to ”Bertoni” for making me look so good in their suits!

Love, Mads Madsen

Back to Past Moment : The Two Misses Greece

By Ayus Wijaya

One of the basic rule in Miss Universe, as well as other most international pageants, dictates that each country should only be represented by one delegate each year. But a unique circumstance in 1954 caused Greece to be represented by two delegates, Rika Dialyna and Efi Andoroulakakis. Out of these two, Rika Dialyna is the official representative of Greece for Miss Universe 1954. However, due to passport problems, she was unable to enter United States, where the pageant was held. Efi Andoroulakakis was sent to replace her. Later Dialyna's visa problems were sorted out in the last minute and she was able to compete at Miss Universe 1954. Androulakakis decided to withdraw from the pageant after Dialyna's arrival, refusing the offer from the pageant officials that she continue to compete as "Miss Crete"

The two Misses Greece at Miss Universe 1954
Rika Dialyna (left) and Efi Andoroulakakis (right)

Both Misses Greece did not come home empty handed. Prior to Dialyna's arrival, Andoroulakakis was voted as Miss Congeniality by her fellow contestants, an award that she continue to claim even after her withdrawal from the pageant. While Dialyna herself later on managed to place as one of the Top 16 semifinalists in the contest.
