The Story from Ordos Part 1

By Ayus Wijaya

The first ever pageant I have watched in my entire life was the final of Miss World 1999, broadcasted on television by Indosiar that time. I was only 14 years old, still on the second grade of junior high school, and was totally fascinated by the show that I become an enthusiast pageant fans for the next 13 years. I love every pageant ever since, but Miss World would always have a special spot in my heart. I have followed it, year by year religiously, on newspaper, internet, and television, while dreaming that one day I could watch it live on the venue myself. Well, that dream finally comes true this year, when I got the opportunity to go to Ordos and watch Miss World 2012 final live at Dongsheng Fitness Center Stadium. It was an amazing once in a lifetime experience and I would love to share the story here. So without further ado, here is "The Story from Ordos"

Chapter 1 : The Journey

The sophisticated architecture of Beijing Capital International Airport

The journey to Ordos requires a total of 10 hours flight, which was taken by 3 different flights. I began my journey on the noon of 16 August 2012 at Husein Sastranegara International Airport in Bandung, with an Air Asia flight that took me to Kuala Lumpur for transit. From there I took the long, grueling, and extremely tiring long-haul Air Asia X flight to the capital of the People's Republic of China, Beijing, and it landed shortly after the midnight. Then I had to wait for about 7 hours at Beijing Capital International Airport before I departed to Ordos on a China Airlines flight. I arrived at Ordos on the noon of 17 August 2012, almost a day since I departed from Bandung.

Erdos 1436, official sponsor of Miss World 2012, outlet at Beijing Capital International Airport

It was by far the longest distance I have ever traveled in my life. No wonder I was totally in jet-lag mode for a while. It was exhausting but it was fun as well. I definitely get a lot of new experiences, meeting with people from all corners of the world, waiting on a very long line of queue for baggage check-ins, navigating my way from one terminal to the other, and the most memorable one - sleeping at the airport while waiting for my flight to Ordos. Yes I did sleep on a hard wooden couch at Beijing Capital International Airport, with my luggage as my pillow! Certainly not the best of accommodation and I felt totally uncomfortable at the time. But now when I take a look back at my journey, I actually feel glad for the experience as it has enriched my life even more.

Chapter 2 : The City and The People

I first heard the name of Ordos, which means "palaces" in Mongolian, in 2010 when the city became one of the location visited by Miss World contestants that time. I never imagine that 2 years later, I would eventually visit the city for Miss World 2012. As soon as I arrived, I was welcomed by a small drizzle. It was almost autumn in the northern China and the weather, while it was sunny and warm most of the times, could  suddenly drop to freezing cold, especially in the morning.

Inner Mongolia has been associated with deserts and dunes, and Ordos is no exception. There are two large deserts surrounding the city, Kubuqi in the north and Maowusu in the south. In the middle of the two deserts, the urban area of Ordos lies with its lavish alien-shaped buildings, towering skyscrapers, and ultra-modern infrastructures. Considering the fact that Ordos has one of the highest nominal per-capita GDP in China, it is totally understandable how the city has grown to become a modern and developed urban area. Right now Ordos may not be too popular internationally, but with its rapid development, as well as its strategy to host popular international event such as the Miss World competition, it could someday become a popular destination among the world travelers, just like Sanya growing popularity after hosting the Miss World in 2003.

Downtown Ordos during the night

According to the 2010 census, Ordos is a home of 1,940,653 people, with Han and Mongols as the two most prominent ethnics. That is perhaps why every signs and boards in the city, including the name of the streets, stores, and buildings, are mostly written bilingually in Chinese Mandarin and Mongolian. The people are actually very warm and welcoming to tourists and visitors. However, communication with local people could be quite a challenge as most of them do not speak English. I was lucky to have a guide who can speak English. Annie Liu, my guide, was very helpful during my stay in Ordos. She helped me to communicate with  local people, accompany me to explore the city and its interesting places, and arrange my transportation to attend the Miss World 2012 final. If only I didn't have her help, I would have definitely been "lost in translation".

Chapter 3 : The Mausoleum and The Desert

The cloudy sky above the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan

The sacred colors gold, blue, and white dominating the design of the Mausoleum

There are a lot places of interest that tourists can explore and visit in Ordos. I happen to visit two of them, which were also visited by Miss World 2012 contestants. The first one was the Genghis Khan Mausoleum. Though it is a Mausoleum, do not expect to find the body of the once great Mongolian emperor there. The Mausoleum is actually a cenotaph, where the coffin contains no body, but only headdresses and accessories, because the actual Tomb of Genghis Khan has never been discovered. It was built between 1954 and 1956 by the government of the People's Republic of China in the traditional Mongolian style and dominated by the color of blue, gold, and white as they are regarded as sacred by the Mongols. The Mausoleum also houses a collection of ancient Mongolian artifacts including ancient weapons, housewares, farming tools, and jewelries. If you are interested in history, the Mausoleum is definitely a place that you have to visit.

Endless sand of Xiangshawan dunes

The fascinating sand sculptures of Xiangshawan dunes

The other location I visited was the Xiangshawan desert. At first I thought it would be very hot there. And I was completely wrong. The desert was actually very cold, especially in the morning when it was windy. I have worn my jacket and my body was still chilling from the cold. The cold weather however did not stop me from enjoying the beauty of the desert. After wearing the sand boots to protect my feet from getting stuck inside the soft surfaced sand, I was more than ready to enjoy the desert. Aside from the stunning view of the endless sands, there are a lot of activities that tourists can explore there, including desert bike, desert train, desert off-road, 5D cinema, camel riding, sand sculpting, and watching traditional Mongolian wedding. if you are interested in adventures, the Xiangshawan desert is definitely a place that you should not miss.

Chapter 4 : The Overture to The Final

Miss World 2012 Final ticket

Finally it's time to talk about the main reason why I traveled to Ordos in the first place - Miss World 2012 final. The show was started at 7.30 PM local time but guests and supporters were required to attend the venue at 7.00 PM. The stadium itself actually has enough seating place for 40,000 spectators. However being a sports stadium, the seats are positioned around the stadium and it would be difficult to watch the stage from some seating position. To solve the problem Miss World has built a large structural platform which directly face the stage in the middle of the stadium to be used as seating place instead. The seating area was then divided into several sections with different price of ticket, including some reserved VIP sections for the national directors and families of the contestants as well as honorable guests. My seat was located at section B3. Along the way, there were some local youths in blue uniform who worked as ushers and helped the guests to find their seat.

Backview of the seating platform at Miss World 2012 Final venue

When I arrived and took my seat at the stadium, most of the other seats were still empty. But it took just a few minutes before people started to flock inside the stadium and suddenly the venue was crowded by the spectators.. Most of them were of course the proud supporters of the host country China. But I also spotted a group of supporters from England, Australia, Jamaica, and my home country Indonesia waving their national flags as they cheered for their delegates. The demographics of people who came to watch the final show was surprisingly quite diverse, from kids and teens to adults and elders. Apparently the glamorous magic of a beauty pageant could allure people from all different age.

The amazing stage of Miss World 2012 moments before the final started

At 7.30 PM the show started with a 30 minutes special highlights showcasing videos of the contestants month-long activities before the big night. While most of the activities had been covered in the news outlets and thousands of photos before, it was definitely more exciting to watch the videos and see the contestants in motion. A lot of them look even more beautiful than what you see in pictures! The special highlights also showed us clips from the amazing Miss World Opening Ceremony, one of the most spectacular pageant moment I have ever seen in my entire life. It was nice for Miss World Organization to come up with the idea of having this 30 minutes extra, because now we could see more behind-the-scene clips without disrupting the duration for the actual final.

One of the most amazing moment of my life, watching the Miss World final live!

And so the actual final started at around 8.00 PM and in the next 2 hours we would watch how Wenxia Yu from China conquer the world ... but we will talk about that later in the second part of my story. Stay tuned!

Miss World 2012 : The First and The Most

Miss World 2012 is already over with a very deserving victory of Wenxia Yu from China. But we still have some more things to share regarding the biggest beauty pageant in the world, including the story of our journey from Ordos. But before that, let's talk about some of the record-breaking and historical moments from Miss World 2012 in this chapter - The First and The Most!

The FIRST

• First time ever participant
For the first time ever, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and South Sudan - all of which are African countries - send their delegates to Miss World.
• First time debut of Multimedia Award
A new component at Miss World contest, the Multimedia Award makes its first time ever debut. The award allows the contestants to create a personal diary of their journey throughout the competition via social media likes Facebook and Twitter.
• First time no beachwear parade
Since the debut of Beach Beauty in 2003, each delegate, particularly the finalists of the event, is required to strut in beachwear in a bikini parade watched by the judges and sometimes, the spectators. But in 2012, there is no longer a beachwear parade. Instead the contestants participate in a private beachwear filming at Xiangshawan dunes where only the Miss World crew have the access to the location.
• First time placement
South Sudan, with its delegate Atong Demach, makes the cut as finalist at Miss World and also wins the  Continental Queen of Africa title for the first time ever.
• First time African Top Model winner
In addition, South Sudan also makes a history as the first ever African delegate to win the Top Model title. Previously no African country has ever won the title although Angola has almost made it twice when they became First Runner Up of Top Model in 2004 and 2008.
• First time Asian Talent winner
China, with its delegate, Wenxia Yu, becomes the first ever Asian delegate to win Talent title. Lena Ma, another woman with Chinese ancestry, has actually won the same title in 2009, but that time she was a representative of Canada, a country located in Americas continent
• First time double victory
India, with its delegate Vanya Mishra, becomes the first ever country to win two challenge events at a single edition of Miss World pageant. She wins both Multimedia and Beauty with a Purpose title.
• First time Talent winner to become Miss World winner
We have had 2 Beach Beauty and 2 Top Model winners eventually become the overall winner of Miss World, but this is the first time a delegate who wins Talent winner eventually crowned as Miss World.

The MOST

• Most participants ever
With 116 contestants, Miss World 2012 once again breaks its personal record of participants as well as the world record of international beauty pageants with the most number of contestants.
• Most challenge events ever
With the addition of Multimedia Award, Miss World 2012 features 6 different challenge events, the most since the concept debut in 2003.
• Most spotlighted dancers at Dance of The World ever
This year Dance of The World features 19 dancers including 11 individual traditional dancers and 8 additional "belly-dancers" which is a record number for this fiesta of culture and tradition.
• Most appearances at Dance of The World ever
With 3 times appearance at Dance of The World each, Mexico and Latvia become the two nations who have performed their national dance the most at Miss World stage.
• Most nominees for a single challenge event
The Top Model challenge events initially features 56 nominees before cut down to 46 and then to 10. This is the most number of nominees ever to be shortlisted for a single challenge event.
• Most challenge event victories
With its double victory for Multimedia and Beauty with a Purpose challenge events, India is now tied with Mexico and Canada as the countries with the most challenge event victories. All of them have won 3 challenge event titles each.
 • Most number of challenge event winners to become finalists
With 4 (China, Wales, South Sudan, and India) out of this year 5 challenge event winners make the final cut as Top 7 finalists, Miss World 2012 breaks the record of challenge event winners becoming finalists. The previous record was held by Miss World 2009 where 3 challenge event winners (Gibraltar, Mexico, and Canada) made Top 7 that time.

Predicting The Winners of Miss World 2012 Challenge Events

The challenge events, formerly known as Fast Track, are key components of Miss World judging system. While they are not the sole factor in determining the result, the events will give quite an impact as the winner and finalists from each event will be given extra points that will help them to leap and jump into a better position on the scoreboard. After the lucky shortlist for 4 challenge events this year revealed, we are trying to predict who will likely come up triumphant in each event. And here they are our prediction for Miss World 2012 Challenge Event winners!

Top Model

Winner prediction : South Sudan
Miss South Sudan is a second coming of Alex Wek. Hailing from the same country as the famous supermodel, she also shares a lot of feature that would make her a great model on the catwalk, including her statuesque height, proportional body shape, exotic face, and beautiful ebony skin. In the real world of fashion, black African models have experienced success at even international stage, and we think it is also about time for Miss World to a fierce ebony girl like Miss South Sudan as their Top Model.

Close calls : Mexico, Spain, China

Sports

Winner prediction : Northern Ireland
It is a tough call to decide which one between her and Miss Sweden should be the Sportswoman champion this year, but in the year we go with this British girl. Miss Northern Ireland certainly has a great record during the Sports competition. She was the third best girl in the long jump contest. Her group was the winner for the shuttle run. And she was the fastest swimmer on her lap during the swimming race. This should be more than enough to put her a strong contender for Sports title.

Close calls : Sweden, England, Scotland

Talent

Winner prediction : Philippines
We have seen singers and dancers performing and winning the Talent show of Miss World for years. But beat box is clearly a one in a million talent at Miss World stage. Therefore, we really hope and wish Miss Philippines, the queen of beat box, will win this category. Just take a look at the video of her performance above and you will certainly understand why we are completely wowed by her unique talent.

Close calls : Jamaica, China

Beach Fashion

Winner prediction : Ukraine
Easy, breezy, beautiful! Miss Ukraine is a clear example of a woman that you would love to see in beachwear. She has a great body, she has a beautiful face, and she has the confidence to show her beauty. A good beachwear model is not only required to have a good figure but also a strong sense of confidence. Miss Ukraine has those two, along with one of the most beautiful face in the competition, and we believe she is totally beach fashion worthy!

Close calls : Brazil, Philippines, Puerto Rico

Now how about yourself? Who is your fave to win each Challenge Events? Don't be shy to share and stay tuned for Miss World 2012 Grand Final on 18 August 2012 to find out who will be the actual winners of each Challenge Events!

7 Reasons Why We Love Miss World 2012

As pageant fans, we have always loved Miss World. But this year, we love Miss World even more. There are several reasons why we love this year edition even more, and here they are : the 7 reasons why we love Miss World 2012!

1. The New Website
The old Miss World website was totally an understatement for the oldest and the prestigious Grand Slam pageant. It was pale compared to its key rival, Miss Universe, website and even Miss Earth, a relatively newbie pageant compared to Miss World long history, has better layout for their website. Thanks God, the people behind Miss World Organization has finally realized the importance of having a proper website and make a huge revamp this year. The website now has a better visual layout (though there is still room for improvement) and more importantly becomes more informative and easier to navigate. And as a nod to the emerging role of social media, the website also integrates all Miss World social accounts (Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube) into one place, a great move which makes the website becomes more interactive as well. So far we are satisfied with the concept of the new website and looking forward for future improvements.

2. The Multimedia Award
What makes a show running is the existence and the enthusiasm of its fans. Without fans, a show would die. Miss World is certainly aware of this and in an unprecedented move, they decided to run a new event this year, the Multimedia Award. As such, each contestant will be given her own official Facebook and Twitter account and asked to tell the story of their Miss World days to the fans by uploading photos, videos, and messages. Even more exciting, whoever turns out as the best social media storyteller would be given bonus points towards her final Scoreboard, a nice incentive to push the girls to post, tweet, and upload their everyday experiences. As it turns out, the Multimedia Award works really well for both sides. Miss World and its contestants enjoy a great coverage through the use of social media. While for the fans, it would be a lot easier now to follow and support the journey of their favorite contestants plus it is more exciting because the story comes personally from the contestants themselves. Therefore, more and more fans will be invested to follow Miss World coverage.

3. The Opening Number
The Chinese are known for their spectacular shows. If you are still doubtful about that fact, just take a look at 2008 Olympics Opening Ceremony, and you will become a believer. So naturally, when a pageant is held in China and they held an Opening Ceremony for the pageant, it would be, in one word, spectacular! Miss World 2012 Opening Ceremony totally lives up to its hype. Set in a grandiose stage, with hundreds of talented performers, ultra sophisticated LED backgrounds, and amazing array of colorful costumes, Miss World 2012 Opening Ceremony is totally full of pomp and pageantry. Just seeing the pictures from the ceremony has already wowed us and we can't wait to see highlights of the ceremony during the final this Saturday.

4. The Dunes Filming
Inner Mongolia is known for its breathtaking sandy dunes, and Miss World smartly took an advantage of this beautiful setting by doing the filming for their opening number at that very place. Adorned in traditional Mongolian royalty dress, the contestants look so captivating as they grace and line up against the endless sand for the filming. Even more interesting, they add some camels to the shoot and we are totally treated to a nomadic, Silk Road style, opening numbers for the final.

5. The World Designers
For long time, Miss World has been known for its glamorous taste of fashion. But this year they up their game by involving two notable international fashion designers into the pageant. The first one, Graeme Black is the Creative Director of ERDOS 1436, who has worked with some of the top names in fashion world, including John Galliano, Giorgio Armani, Salvatore Ferragamo and Hugo Boss. He specifically provides his collection for Top Model challenge event. The other one is Dany Tabet, a Lebanese designer who has won World Fashion Designer Award in 2009. He provides his Aisha beachwear collection as the official swimsuit for Beach Fashion challenge event. With the expertise of these two designers, Miss World 2012 surely will become a fiesta for fashion enthusiasts.

6. The Goddesses
What is a pageant without beautiful women. To speak the truth, we crave pageants because we are attracted to beauty. And if beauty is what you are looking form Miss World 2012 is the perfect place to seek. In one of the strongest batch ever in the history of beauty pageants, Miss World 2012 is roamed by beautiful women from all over the world.Goddesses are virtually here, there, everywhere. The only negative side from this galore of beauties is our job of creating Leaderboard becomes a lot more stressful and difficult!

7. The Return of Scoreboard
We love the scoreboard! it is one of the best scoring system ever introduced in the pageant and we are glad to learn its comeback for 2012 edition. Now even better than ever, the scoreboard will include 2 new challenge events along with the old 5 challenge events and the interview. We can't wait to see the moment the scoreboard unveiled and learn which countries has made the cut on 18 August. Surely it would be very suspenseful and exciting at the same time!

Stay tuned for Miss World 2012 Grand Final on 18 August 2012!

Miss World 2012 : Exploring Ordos

Ordos, whose name means "palace" in Mongolian,is one of the twelve major subdivisions of Inner Mongolia, China. It is located within the Ordos Loop of the Yellow River. One of the richest regions of China, Ordos is extremely rich in natural resources, having one sixth of the coal reserve in China. The pillars of its economy are textile, coal mining, petrochemicals, electricity generation, and production of building materials. The city was one of additional locations visited by Miss World contestants in 2010, but this year its status is elevated into the main location, as Miss World 2012 Grand Final will be held in the city. Check out their adventures in the pictures below!

One of the major tourist attraction in Ordos, the Genghis Khan Mausoleum is a memorial built by between 1954 and 1956 by the Chinese government to commemorate the great man who has become an important figure of Mongolian history. The Mausoleum is actually a cenotaph, where the coffin contains no corpse, but only headdresses and accessories, because the actual Tomb of Genghis Khan has never been discovered.

Exploring the modern side of Ordos. Some contestants took a picture in front of the modern and sophisticated Ordos Mall.

Miss Ukraine took a picture in front of a horse statue at Ordos Agricultutral Museum. The museum is the house for many replicas and displays depicting the agricultural life of traditional Ordos farmers.

At Engebei Museum, the contestans learned about deserts around the world and how they were formed. They also got a chance to watch an informative yet spellbinding 4D movie about deserts and dunes.

Greeneries in the middle of the dunes. Miss Macau posing inside one of Kabuqi greenhouses where farmers grow organic vegetables like gourds, cucumbers, spinach and tomatoes in the middle of Kabuqi desert.

Another interesting spot that the Miss World 2012 contestants visited is the Donglian Pictures and Animated Studio. The studio has a series of replicas of ancient Chinese landmarks including the gateway of the ancient military road, which in the past, could run in a straight line for over  90 kilometres.

The contestans also participated in a green activity as they helped to plant pine trees on another reclaimed area of the Kabuqi Desert.

A group of dancers in colorful costumes welcomed the contestants as they arrive at Donglian Pictures and Animated Studio.

During their visit to Shang Lake, the contestants also got to taste Chinese culture by witnessing a traditional music performance.

The contestants visited the headquarter of BoSiDeng, a famous Chinese fashion label founded in 1976 and has since expanded  around the world. the brand is the only holder of the Grand Prize of Chinese Industry for consumer goods, and has just opened a store in London's West End to coincide with the start of the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Also visited by the contestants is Changshu Clothing City. There each contestant was given a beautiful blue and white silk scarf as welcome gift. Not only that, An entire floor of the vast shopping centre was then closed off especially for the contestants to browse. Girls, it's time for shopping!

Miss World 2012 contestants took a bamboo boat tour during their visit to Changshu wetlands.

Sunny blue sky accompanies the girls during their raft journey on Shang Lake. They were also treated to a rousing river song by their oarsman.

Finally, the girls visited a library of the Ching Dynasty era (1644 - 1911), house for around 2501 texts concerning every subject from medicine to Buddhism. There were also paintings and sample manuscripts dating back to around 800 years ago.
