The Longest Streaks at Miss Universe

Guess every single pageant fans in this world would agree on one thing, that placing as a semifinalist at a competition as fierce as Miss Universe is never an easy thing to do. But, despite the level of competitiveness at Miss Universe, some countries actually manage to make a very long streak of placement as a semifinalist in this pageant. In this article, we have listed Top 10 longest streaks at Miss Universe. Check out the list here!

Longest Streaks at Miss Universe

1 - USA with 22 streaks (1977 - 1998)
2 - Venezuela with 21 streaks (1983 - 2003)
3 - USA with 18 streaks from (1958 - 1975)
4 - India with 11 streaks from (1992 - 2002)
5 - Germany with 10 streaks (1952 - 1961)
6 - Finland with 8 streaks (1962 - 1969)
7 (tied) - Brazil with 7 steaks (1954 - 1960)
7 (tied) - Brazil with 7 streaks (1967 - 1973)
7 (tied) - Sweden with 7 streaks (1964 - 1970)
7 (tied) - USA with 7 streaks (2003 - 2009)

Miss USA Shawnae Nicole Jebbia Top 5 finish at Miss Universe 1998 marks a historic record of 22 consecutive placements by a country in the pageant

As a country where Miss Universe began and has only been unplaced 5 times throughout its history, you can already expected USA is on the top the list. USA currently holds the spectacular record of 22 consecutive placements at Miss Universe which we believe would be very hard and almost impossible to break. At second place in the list is also USA with another spectacular number of streak, 18 consecutive placements. In addition, it still has two other streaks, one at the third place on the list with another spectacular number of streak, 18 consecutive placements, and one at joint seventh in the list with 7 consecutive placements. This latter streak, which happens from 2002 to 2009, is also the longest streak for Miss Universe editions of the new millennium.

Traditional powerhouses Venezuela and India are the next two names on the list after USA. With 21 consecutive streaks from 1983 to 2003, Venezuela is on the verge to break USA record. Too bad, its delegate was shockingly unplaced in 2004, ending its dream to surpass its chief rival at Miss Universe. As for India, a country which was largely ignored during the early days of Miss Universe, it suddenly rises to powerhouse status during the decade of 1990's and sets 11 consecutive placements at Miss Universe, including 2 victories in 1994 and 2000.

Miss India Madhu Sapre placed as Second Runner Up at Miss Universe 1992 which would later turn out to be the beginning of 11 years long streak of her country at Miss Universe

Talk about lucky number seven, the South American country Brazil has two streaks on the list, both with 7 consecutive placements and both placed at joint seventh on the list. But it does not stop there! Its first streak comes from 1954 to 1960 and its second streak happened exactly 7 years after its first streak from 1967 -1973. What a coincidence, right!

Two names that are likely unexpected by most fans to be included in the list are perhaps Germany and Finland, two European nations which barely makes any wave at Miss Universe today. Well, they may not be a strong competitors for Miss Universe now, but during the early years of Miss Universe, they were the powerhouses. As such, it is a no surprise that their streak also comes from the early editions of Miss Universe, Germany from 1952 to 1961 while Finland from 1962 to 1969.

Miss Venezuela Ana Karina Anez Delgado failure to place at Miss Universe 2004 ended her country dream to break USA record at Miss Universe

Also in the list is Sweden at joint seventh with 7 consecutive placements. Like Germany and Finland, Sweden is also a classic powerhouse during the early days of Miss Universe. However unlike its two fellow European nations who eclipsed once Miss Universe entered the new millennium, Sweden still makes some wave every now and then, tough not as competitive as decades before.

So that is all, the Top 10 longest streak at Miss Universe so far. Will any new nations break the record and join this prestigious list anytime soon? Just wait and see!

True Beauty (Chapter 2)

What is True Beauty? True beauty is when someone is not only beautiful outside but also beautiful inside. A person who does not look beautiful but also does beautiful things. In this chapter, we pay tribute for those people and take them as our inspiration in life - that something is only truly beautiful when it has a beautiful meaning for the others.

Natasha Metto
(Miss Kenya 2010)
Winner of the prestigious Miss World Beauty with a Purpose award in 2010, Natasha Metto dedicated her reign as Miss Kenya for those infected by jigger worm epidemic in her country. Working together with a social organization called Ahadi Kenya, Natasha has volunteered her time to educate people about the blood-sucking worm, which burrows under the skin of the foot causing irritation and damage. She visited the areas where the problem is most prevalent in a humanitarian mission to raise awareness of the necessary precautions to avoid the worm, as well as offering treatment to those affected.

Artika Sari Devi (Puteri Indonesia 2004)
Milk, specifically the human breast milk, is the primary source of nutrition for newborns before they are able to eat and digest other foods. It is very important for the newborns that even The World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life. Realizing the importance of the human breast milk, Artika Sari Devi joined a campaign by Kemang Medical Care Hospital as an ambassador to promote exclusive breastfeeding. Through the campaign, Artika worked to help the newborns in Indonesia to get the best nutrition during the most critical time of their life.

Jennifer Reoch (Miss Scotland 2011)
Climbing Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, is never an easy thing to do. But that was exactly what Jennifer Reoch, a finalist at Miss World 2011 contest, did in order to raise donation for research into Parkinson's disease. The remarkable journey was part of "Tiara Appeal", a humanitarian project where Jennifer was involved and successfully raised £100,000 for her chosen charity. In the picture above, you could see Jennifer as she succeeded to reach the top of Kilimanjaro on 23 January 2011.

Nadine Zamira Sjarief (Miss Indonesia Earth 2009)
If there is a Miss Earth contestant who still consistently works to protect environment long after her reign is over, perhaps it is Nadine Zamira. Even today, two years after she is no longer the official titleholder of Miss Indonesia Earth, Nadine still passionately works for the "green" cause. One among many things that she has done is educating elementary school students about environment as you can see in the picture above.

Mister Earth 2011 contestants
The environment issue is now no longer exclusive among the female pageant contestants, but also among the male pageant contestants. One of the male pageant who dedicates itself for the cause is Mister Earth. As part of the platform, the pageant held a special forum where the contestants could discuss about various environmental problems around the world and how to solve it. In the picture above, you can see Mister France, Jordan Haag, as he made a plea in his presentation slide to make our world become more "green".

Top Model Inspiration for Pageant Photo Shoot

We love Next Top Model series, mainly because of their stunning and exhilarating
ideas of photo shoot. Sometimes we wonder if some of these ideas could be used as an inspiration for photo shoot in pageants as well, especially now that photo shoot in pageants starts to become more important than ever. To that end, we have compiled 10 out of hundreds of photo shoot ideas from Next Top Model series around the world that we think would be perfect to be used in pageants. In no particular order, here are those 10 inspirational ideas ... and BTW pardon us if most of them are taken from the Aussie series because their photo shoots are simply amazing!

"Lady Gaga in a Coffin"
from Australia's Next Top Model cycle 7

Where else the most suitable setting for a photo shoot which styling and costume design is inspired from the eccentric Lady Gaga other than a coffin? Combining some otherworldly costumes with an eerie yet elegant setting, this photo shoot really takes creepiness and weirdness into a new level.

"Swimwear on a Beach"
from Australia's Next Top Model cycle 6

Sometimes simplicity is the best policy. This photo shoot is a very simple yet effective one for a swimwear shoot. With a blue sky, blue sea, a golden radiant sunshine, and a natural pose, the photo shoot differs from the usual ultra sexy atmosphere for a swimwear shoot and offers an ethereal softness instead. What we love from this shoot is indeed its soft ambience which gives us the vibe of eternal summer and freedom.

"Avant Garde Beauty Shoot with a Duct Tape"
from Canada's Next Top Model cycle 3

In this photo shoot, the model perhaps could not tell us how beautiful the picture is since her mouth is duct taped. But she doesn't need to. Just take a look at the whole picture and we guess you will understand by yourselves why we want to see this idea of beauty shoot in a pageant.

"Backstage of a Fashion Show"
from America's Next Top Model cycle 16

Since 2007, Miss Universe has started to include portions of backstage footage like girls taking make up or preparing their gowns and costumes into their opening number. We think they can expand the idea into a photo shoot as well. Cycle 16 of America's Next Top Model has shown us that a backstage photo shoot could work really well, so hopefully we could see backstage themed photo shoot in Miss Universe and other pageants soon.

"Beauty Shoot with Reptiles and Insects"
from Poland's Next Top Model cycle 1

Usually disgusting critters and crawlers like snakes, spiders, and roaches suddenly become a beautiful companion for a photo shoot if you know how to work with them. Beauty shoot with reptiles and insects is one of the most common idea used in Next Top Model series around the world and most of the time, they produce a stunning result, just like this one above from the Poland series.

"Couture Dress on a Crane"
from Australia's Next Top Model cycle 7

This idea of photo shoot takes the definition of haute couture as the high fashion literally by levitating a model wearing haute couture dress in a high altitude using a crane. As you can see by yourselves, the result is simply glamorous and mesmerizing.

"Castaway Bride on a Beach"
from Canada's Next Top Model cycle 3

Defying the usual notion that a bride should be cheerful and happy, this photo shoot decides to take the opposite path and portrays an abandoned bride in sad and gloomy emotion. This situation is similar in pageants, where the contestants are usually required to portray a happy emotion in their official pictures. We wish someday there will be one pageant who dares enough to defy this customary. After all, a sad emotion could be equally beautiful as a happy emotion too, just like the bride in the picture above tells us.

"Wind and Rain Beauty Shoot"
from America's Next Top Model cycle 14

What makes the photo shoot above special is obviously the rainy effect, because without it, the picture is just an ordinary beauty shoot. Therefore the most important lesson that we could take from this idea is sometimes adding a simple effect could change the result of the picture dramatically. May it be winds or rains, it makes your photo shoot stands out!

"Glamorous Shoot in a Chateau"
from Australia's Next Top Model cycle 7

One of the key element in a photo shoot is its setting. All around the world, there are a lot of beautiful places, and if the pageant organizer knows which one to pick to support the idea of their photo shoot, they could potentially produce a beautiful shoot for their pageant, just like the picture above. When the models of cycle 7 of Australia's Next Top Model visited France, they took an aristocratic themed glamor photo shoot in the best possible setting they could have, a classic chateau. The result, as you can see above, is simply gorgeous.

"Hollywood Glamor in Black and White"
from Poland's Next Top Model cycle 2

The idea of this photo shoot follows one of the most fundamental rule in photo shoot, glamor shoot works best in black and white. Being shot in monochromatic tone is one strong point of this shoot as it makes the result become more elegant. The styling of the model also works perfectly with the black and white theme. It evokes a feeling as if the model in the picture is a classic Hollywood starlet in the 1950's. A perfect combination, right?
